What converts tyrosine into melanin?
The TYR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called tyrosinase. This enzyme is located in melanocytes, which are specialized cells that produce a pigment called melanin. It converts a protein building block (amino acid) called tyrosine to another compound called dopaquinone.
Can tyrosine increase melanin?
Our results show that melanosomes from melanocytes originating from light and dark skin types differ in favoring eu- or pheomelanin synthesis. Furthermore, we found that the tyrosine-induced increase of melanin influenced melanosomal size and shape, especially of those originating from the light skin types.
